SYNOPSIS & PROJECT DESCRIPTION

'A Charred Slipper' was met with standing ovations and sold-out performances during its November 2007 production in Bolinas, as well as receiving rave reviews. Reviewers had these comments: "This psychological drama is not to be missed…serious ideas are played with in very often refreshing and humorous ways." –Point Reyes Light. "Patrice Daley has created a smorgasbord for theatre and drama fans." –West Marin Citizen.

The play is a psychological dramatic comedy that takes place in 1948 when the lobotomy craze was at its peak. At the same time, socially-oriented therapies—such as Group Therapy and Psychodrama—were gaining in popularity. Though the play takes place in a mental institution and deals with some serious issues, the characters tell the story of this shift in psychological methods in an engaging and often amusing way. And, of course, there are other elements as well. For example, Doctor Thornhill, the Psychiatrist who runs the place, is bent on establishing himself as an expert in dealing with the artistic mind 'particularly deranged actors' and has filled his elite clinic to capacity with actors. Reggie Larson, a former silent film star reduced to circus clown because he couldn’t make the transition into Talkies, has been brought to the clinic to sober up. Matinee Idol, Chadwick Powers, is afflicted with 'Thespian Libido Syndrome,' just one of the actors’ maladies that Doctor Thornhill would like to become famous for. Much to Thornhill’s vexation, a delusional patient who believes she’s Zelda Fitzgerald is putting on an autobiographical play using the other patients as actors. Add these factors and several other unhinged actors to the 'play within a play' structure and you have a theatre piece that is not lacking in drama.

In the spring of 2007, Patrice Daley began a series of Acting Workshops, based on method-acting techniques, from which she gleaned some very talented actors—some well-seasoned, some aspiring novices—all committed to bringing a professional work of art to the stage. Her previous play 'A Strand of Pearls' was well-received by the West Marin and also got good reviews in the local papers.
